12-23-2003 - Mysterious Disease Affects one Million Americans

NEW YORK, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Lupus is a severely debilitating disease that causes the immune system to attack the body. It can be deadly and it affects more than one million Americans, 90 percent of them young women.

Patients say the drugs available to treat Lupus were designed for other diseases and they're causing more problems than they solve. Now, new research is uncovering treatments that may have fewer side effects.

Despite the harmful effects of existing therapies, no drugs designed
specifically to treat the cause of Lupus have been approved by the FDA.

The development of new drug candidates that are designed to target the
cause of Lupus may offer patients hope for improved treatments. One of these, Riquent, was just submitted to the FDA for review and potential approval.
